Terry joined Swart, Lalande & Associates, P.C. (SLA) in 1972 prior to his college graduation. Over the years, he climbed his way through the firm ranks to his current role as shareholder. As a member of SLA’s tax department, Terry is responsible for assisting management and staff with reviewing tax returns, consulting with individual income tax clients and providing reliable trustee services.
After more than 37 years in the accounting industry, Terry knows the ins and outs of the profession and is regarded as an expert by his clients and colleagues. Throughout his career, he has assisted clients with a wide range of issues. In particular, Terry previously served as the co-executor for an Estate, which included overlooking the sale of a farm, supervising the management of a building materials company, selling inventory and real estate, and serving as a co-trustee of a grandchildren trust. In addition, he has provided consultation, financial statement audit and tax preparation services for a large construction company, real estate investment firm and management corporation for over 30 years.
Terry gained an interest in accounting during a bookkeeping course in high school. Today he attributes his success to numerous factors, including God, his supportive family, the opportunity provided to him by SLA, and his hard work and determination. Terry also credits his father, who taught him by example how to be strong and independent and how to live life to its fullest. Additionally, Terry credits his service in the United States Air Force, which had a major influence on his personal development and maturity after he joined during the Vietnam War.
Terry was raised on a small dairy farm in Wisconsin. He currently resides in Gainesville, Virginia with his wife, Marilyn. Together they have three children and five grandchildren. In his free time, Terry enjoys playing golf, bowling, traveling and going to the beach. He is also an active member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church.
